Mr. Hazel Nelson Carothers was born on June 17, 1934, in York County, South Carolina, to the late Perry James Carothers and Sallie Bell Anderson Carothers. He peacefully departed this life on April 14, 2026, at CaroMont Health in Gastonia, North Carolina.
Affectionately known as “Uncle Hazel,” he was a beloved figure to many. He attended the public schools of Clover, South Carolina, and later dedicated over 20 years of service to the City of Gastonia before retiring. Hazel was a man of simple joys and cherished routines. He enjoyed starting his mornings with breakfast at Bojangles and never missed a stop at McDonald’s for his large, sweet tea. His presence, warmth, and familiar smile will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Herbert Carothers, Emma Lee Kendrick, Grace Young, Sammy Lee Carothers, Ruby Lee Cook, Willie Robert Carothers, and Cynthia Ann Adams.
He leaves to cherish his memory: one daughter, Catherine Carothers; two stepchildren, Latoria Carothers and Albert Carothers; one grandson, Ronnie Brooks; and three great- grandchildren, Isabella McIntosh, Demarrick Floyd, and Easton Brooks. He is also survived by his devoted caregiver and niece, Carolyn Carothers; special nieces and nephews, Tiara Carothers, Byron Carothers, Alanna Burris, Alex Hamilton, Almeilana Brice, Roffiel Kendrick, Gene Kendrick, Nelson Cook, Jeffery Cook, and Jordan Carothers; along with a host of other loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Please keep his family in your prayers.
